Ninth Unicycle Festival To Take Over NYC

Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc. will once again produce the NYC Unicycle Festival, its ninth annual staging. The event runs from August 30 to September 2 and encompasses Governor’s Island, long distance rides from Battery Park to Central Park, and Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island.  The festival also includes public shows, a learn-to-ride area, unicycle hockey, basketball and sumo, a trails course and workshops.  The popular event attracts recreational riders, world-class performers, mountain and off-road enthusiasts, mono-wheel inventors, circus enthusiasts and is open to all ages and abilities.

 

New York Clown Theatre Festival Slated for September

The twelfth edition of this biennial international celebration of all things clowning will run from Sept 3 through the 23rd.  Its traditional opening is a free participatory indoor pie fight.  The following day Jon Davidson from the London Clown School will present a free lecture entitled “Dynamics of a Clown.”  A panel discussion “Clowning while female” moderated by Kendall Cornell of Clowns Ex Machina is scheduled for Sept 9.  It all concludes with a Clown Funeral on Sept 23.   Events in between include a Clown Cabaret on Sept 20, and a performance of Angela Delfini Explains It All for You, described as a 3/4 woman show which has been created in collaboration with John Towsen, author of xxxxxx.  This show which comes to the U.S. from Italy  will play two previews at the Baltimore Theatre in Baltimore, MD  on Sept. 6 and 7 before heading to New York.  Towsen will also lead one of his popular workshops “Very Physical Comedy” on Sept 15-16.  These and other events will be held at the Brick, 579 Metropolitan Ave. in Brooklyn.

 

NICA Applications Due August 24

Applications to enroll in a program at the Australian National Circus School (NICA) are due August 24.  A circus background is not required and in fact few of the applicants have such experience.  More common is experience in martial arts, gymnastics, diving, trampolining, cheerleading, and dance.  Auditions will be held in late Sept, and early October.  Apple at nica.com.au.  Read more about the courses of study offered and the success of the school’s graduates at www.nica.com.au/courses-pm-3.html
